Life and Novel Update!

Today I sent the finished version of Roses of Ash to my agent! Hooray! It feels so good to finally get it off my chest. ROA went through four CPs and underwent some small character modification and word choice issues. Definitely the easiest draft of something I've ever had to edit.

Thank you Rose, for being the easiest character to work with :-)

With it went a few ideas for new stories, including the Steampunk Cinderella, but also one I haven't told you guys about yet. So I'm going to do so now :-)

Chris and I have been playing Left 4 Dead, and one night when I had what I think is my first case of insomnia, the plot for a book just jumped into my head: It's a YA about a girl struggling to escape from her high school after it is locked down during the Zombie Apocalypse. Sort of like The Breakfast Club with zombies :D

After ROA and Nameless, I think this might be the one I work on next, postponing Steampunk Cinderella (provided Teh Agent gives her approval, of course). The reason being that Cinderella still needs a lot of world-building I don't have quite yet, and the plot is still a little fuzzy, whereas the Zombie novel has a complete plot and will be of a genre and POV I'm more comfortable with. Plus I've wanted to do a contemporary for a while, mostly because I feel disinterested in contemporary as a whole and want to test myself by seeing how well I do writing in the 'real world'.

Side note: Here lies the reason why lots of writers don't talk about what they're working on until it's finished... projects get reshuffled and cancelled all the time.

Plus, did I mention I'm MIND-BOGGLINGLY EXCITED about working on a zombie book?! I've had a fascination with zombies for years (you can read about my zombie issues in this article here). What I love about zombie pieces is the tension that flows through them... you never know what's going to be around the next corner. World War Z by Max Brooks is one of my absolutely favorite books of all time... I have zombie anthologies, zombie movies... I even watch zombie short films on youtube. I'll post a longer book summary later on this week so you guys can have knowledge of the awesomeness of this plot :-)

In other news... I'm going on a writer retreat! With the other girls from Let The Words Flow! Next week!

I'm meeting up with Kat Zhang, Susan Dennard, Sarah Maas, and Biljana Likic in Jacksonville, Florida. We're staying in a beach house on the coast and going to Harry Potter world!

I've been looking forward to this for seven months. I lost 15 pounds for the summer and have collected fabulous sangria and cooking recipes to make for the girls. Can't even contain my excitement! While I've never been to Jacksonville, I imagine it looks something like this:

I will definitely take tons of pictures of HP World and share them with you :-)

Most awesome sounding writer's retreat ever!

I knowwwww. I'm so excited I get butterflies every time I think about it.

Yay, congratulations on sending Roses of Ash to your agent. And the zombie novel sounds really interesting.

And hope you all have a wonderful writer's retreat!

Thanks! The zombie novel is just... pouring out of me. I can't write it fast enough.

That's awesome that you got your novel sent in! It's amazing how much hard work goes into one piece of writing.

ZOMGOSH Left 4 Dead is an awesome game. I was playing it at this restaurant/arcade and I was THIS close to beating it. But then I ran out of money, ha ha.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Jacksonville! The area that you're staying in (Neptune/Atlantic Beach, right?) is really pretty and nice. I look forward to meeting you, as well! <3

Thanks, Sydney! Are you a zombie fan?
Jul. 13th, 2011 08:52 pm (UTC)
You know, I've never really thought about zombies in depth, but I do like zombie movies, and I did enjoy The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, so maybe I am a fan! It's weird because they definitely creep me out, but I'm somewhat fascinated by the idea. Not sure if that's good or not, though. :P

I loved that book, though a lot of my friends didn't. Maybe it was just cause I loved the concept and was willing to let everything else slide...

They definitely creep me out, too. Most creepy monster ever.

Yeah, I know what you mean about The Forest of Hands and Teeth. It didn't meet my expectations, but (like you said) the concept is fascinating. It did leave a lot of unanswered questions. I suppose in a future like that, though, not many questions would be answered....

Are you allowed to talk about what Roses of Ash is about? The title alone is beautiful, but still enigmatic. :)

If you visit this post (http://savannahjfoley.livejournal.com/35343.html) I have links at the top sharing summaries, excerpts, and even a trailer!

I'm not really one of those writers that keeps everything under wraps... I probably should, if only becomes sometimes projects end up not working out, but if I didn't talk about my writing I'd have nothing to say ;)

Oh WOW, Roses of Ash looks AMAZING. Seriously, I love good plot twists and this seems like it will be filled with them.

I never got the chance to read Nameless while it was still on FP, but I've been eagerly anticipating it (yes, I've totally been stalkinmg your website for a while now). Nameless looks like it will be utterly fascinating, to be honest. But, I think it's really cool that you can go from a novel like Nameless to one like Roses of Ash - I love writers with variety! ^_^

And now one about zombies, lol. Honestly all this genre switching could get me in trouble, but Mandy Hubbard seems to have done it with no problem... granted, she is an agent, too, lol.

So I'm totally pumped that I'm not the only one out there that is, a, plays Left 4 Dead with their boyfriend and, b, is mildly obsessed with zombies. I was actually just playing L4D2 yesterday... Do you and Chris have a zombie apocalypse plan? Cuz the BF and I do. And I'm totally serious haha

Congrats of ROA! And if you love HP even a smidgen you're gonna have a blast in Harry Potter World. I went there this past February when I was on spring break with my team. It is FANTASTIC!
Jul. 14th, 2011 03:56 am (UTC)
Eee, another zombiephile!! I'm not a gamer at all but I'm handling L4D all right... trying to get my kill counts up there so I can be competitive with Chris's scores, lol.

We don't have a plan per se, because we know it's not technically real, but we were part of the power outages during the Alabama tornado earlier this year and it really highlighted how unprepared we were for any disaster. So we have a disaster plan, and okay my mom and I have a Rapture plan, but nothing for zombies specifically, lol :-)

Haha I'm barely a gamer too. I'm only vaguely successful with L4D when the BF and I play it on the computer through Steam, because having my controllers be a mouse and the w,a,s,d keys are SO much easier for me than the joysticks on the Xbox controllers. Oh, and I only play on "easy" lol. Either way, I still can't be competitive with the BF. He'll purposely shoot at those blinking red cars to alert the hoard to get his numbers up, while blocking me out of the fun because he's standing in the doorway of the safe room. Gah! The drama of a L4D relationship...
Jul. 14th, 2011 03:53 pm (UTC)
I much prefer computer games than video games. I never had video games growing up so the buttons and knobs aren't instinctive for me.

My favorite computer game (aside from Warcraft 3, lol) was Aliens vs. Predators, Gold Edition. I loved to be the alien and climb around on ceilings and bite people's heads off. I can't get the hang of shooting things, but clawing was easy and fun!
Jul. 14th, 2011 07:36 pm (UTC)
I haven't heard of the Aliens vs. Predators game, but that sounds like an AWESOME character! haha

Also, I peeked at your other post, and I can't wait for a teaser of this zombie project. Perhaps you'll inspire me to rearrange the order I have my next projects... Best of luck!
