The Puppy Love Stage of Novel Writing

I've got the puppy love.

My friends lazy_iris and sjmaas read the first few chapters of the time travel novel and offered me some really good feedback on the characterization and development of plot. I'm about to add in a new character, who is basically the Hispanic, American version of Carowyn, lol, and get serious about making an outline.

Oh, how I loathe outlines! But only in theory. I suppose in actual application they are very useful.

Sarah and I were having a discussion about where this book would fit into the market, and while I like to think of myself as writing the books I would like to read (a la Toni Morrison), I have also considered myself to be a mature YA author.

The trouble is, there's no such thing. So if I had to choose, I suppose this new novel would be an adult book (no, not that kind of adult).

But, come to think of it, I am planning on putting in some dark stuff... early death, rape, drug addiction, etc. These things happen in the real world, and real life is complicated. I want my characters to be complicated as well.

Anyway, today the fiance and I are driving 4 hours to Auburn, AL to attend some science talk. Should be an adventure. I love adventure.
